Itohowo EkereteThe entire book has lessons in each story. Howbeit they are tragedies, the last story, Painted Love ended hopefully. She came back to the one she loved. The author, Abubakar Ibrahim captured the beauty of tradition, belief, the state of corruption in the political system and police force, the nemesis of rape and lust, murder and the consequences of the decisions we make. The Whispering Trees is a book one should read with an open mind.
THE GARBAGE MAN.
Idleness has a way of messing with your mind, your sense of judgement and the decisions you take. Amarya was in this predicament such that she questioned her decision to marry her husband and keep her baby. Her husband was wise to agree to the compromise of getting her a busy job. Any perspective is getting into marriage without the why. It felt like she was not ready to marry just yet but as an opportunity presented itself she went along. The thing that keeps us on hold are promises made and when it's time to execute, excuses are the new music and promises. Neglecting her, her happiness, her thoughts and being selfish made her feel left out. He got a dose of his medicine once and his actions changed. I especially love how each character was related to the blooming flower and male avocados that were cut down. I guess that's what she did with her garbage man - master.
TWILIGHT AND MIST
It is a mystery, who the girl is, why she came and the meaning of the message. ' life comes as a shadow, but it is nothing but twilight and mist'.
It makes me wonder how he will survive her death a second time for the same reason- his favourite gift ( a pair of size 7 Adidas boots).
BABA IDI'S ENCLAVE
Baba Idi has a penchant for not being caught unprepared. I can attribute it to the lessons from the death of his girl which he, blames on the government. But how does one change one wrong to good by doing another wrong?
THE WHISPERING TREES
Being blind is a different kind of death. One can embrace it to become alive in the mind and discover the vision hidden from you while having your sight. Listen more to things than to words that are said, the action, the silence, the laughter, the gestures, the unspoken thoughts. How you handle situations that shake your belief system determines how you come out of it. After his fiance left him he suffered a bit till he accepted it which opened him up to new realities.
ONE FINE MORNING
Some jokes open the door to it becoming a reality. It took a month to plot the real version of the April fools joke. Now the joke is on the wife cos she opened the door for it from the onset.
CLOSURE
The new wife felt death was the closure. Except she missed out on the opportunity to honour her husband's memory and their relationship. Oh, the sister got the jokes on herself. Being greedy never ends well. Now there is nothing to share again.
NIGHT CALLS
When you meet someone over the phone, there are things you may never get to understand. There are two kinds of prison, the physical and the one in your mind. The story also shows the flaws in our police system where bribery can convict an innocent man. Except for the person he thinks is guilty is also in a prison and the only way out was lost to love confessions.
PLEDGE OF FIDELITY
Dreams can become your reality, so be mindful of pledges made so they don't haunt you in reality.
THE WHIRLWIND
Lust is the downfall of man. When you fan its fire be ready to bear its consequences. In this case, murder solved the nuisance of a beautiful girl with a bad character and attitude.
CRY OF THE WITCH
Everyone will die because one man decided he wants to be a god. Greed and lack of contentment and foolishness he killed, after killing the only two persons that could bring redemption to the village. Truly death has no respect. The only person who will live to tell the tale is the only one who may be alive to tell it, the little girl. Be mindful of the company you keep. This could be the reason that breakthroughs delayed cos they will abort it or steal it from you.
PAINTED LOVE
Love can be colours, an attitude, a state of mind, a code of action and a belief system. Your willingness to become vulnerable to whatever form it takes will be how you enjoy the comforts it promises. Running away from it hurts you more than running to it, LOVE.
