The Chosen
The first time I heard the word "binge", I knew I would one day get to use it in describing something I loved doing.
So yes, I binge movies.
But #BingeJesus?? What?! Is this playing??
When did Jesus turn into a series, but it was... and that was when I got to know The Chosen.
About The Chosen
The Chosen is a faith-based series that follows the life of Jesus and his disciples. The series is being applauded as, arguably, the closest any drama has come to accurately depicting biblical characters.
Being the first crowd-funded project of its kind, this movie is breaking grounds with over 400 million viewers on the movie app.
So what is The Chosen really about? How "Aprocryphal" has The Chosen gotten? Because a "Christian movie" based on the bible can't be that good.
Or can it?
FAQs on The Chosen
Is The Chosen a remake of The Passion of Christ?
Unlike the Passion of Christ which highlights the crucifixion of Jesus, The Chosen spends more time delving into the mundane life of Jesus through the eyes of his disciples. We even get to see Jesus brush his teeth.
What happens
This makes The Chosen a lot more appreciated. Seeing the life of Jesus progress through the lens of those closest to him.
Is the Chosen Biblical?
Like any creative story, The Chosen does employ the use of fictional Characters, but these characters provide a background for the story. You have characters like Eden— Simon Peter's wife etc.
For the most part of it, The Chosen sticks to biblical narratives of the Gospels, and the creator goes as far as seeking Consultations from Biblical scholars to consolidate the historical context.
Keep calm. The Chosen is committed to staying within the boundaries of the contexts provided in the Gospels.
Won't The Chosen replace the Bible?
To be fair, I was worried about this too. I saw so many testimonies of "The Chosen brought me Closer to God". I mean the actress who plays Mary Madgalene, Elizabeth Tabish was Skeptic and testified of The Chosen and her role helping her back into Faith.
What if people start seeing the Chosen as the Bible. Or rather, what if The Chosen Jesus becomes people's idea or imagery of Jesus?
But Surely, it's going to take more than a movie to do that.
In no way does The Chosen replace the Bible. Though the series does bring a realistic representation to the stories we've read in the Bible, it remains just what it is— a creative narration. A popular fan sentence is "You can't just watch The Chosen."
The Chosen is not the Bible, at most, it is a creative entertaining piece that can stir you up.
Do you Know you can watch the Chosen and read your Bible too? You don’t, well now you do.
Right now, millions of fans are getting prepared for the release of the third season in theaters come November 18th.
Let's run through what the Journey of the Chosen has been like, shall we?
The Chosen Season 1 (Summary)
The first season of The Chosen follows the beginning of Jesus' public ministry. It explores Jesus and his relationship with 6 disciples, notably Simon Peter— the very zealous fisherman, husband and brother, and Matthew— the Tax collector, others like Mary Madgalene who was healed of her demon possession, and Nicodemus who well, was so close to being born again.
The beauty of the first season would most probably be the progressive nature of Jesus' relationship with the disciples. What is narrated in few chapters of the bible is enacted in 8 eight episodes of approximately 40 minutes each. And while it is slow, it provides a unique and complicated story to each of the Disciples bringing a warm, humanistic approach to the popular characters we know.
The Chosen Season 2 (Summary)
As season 2 progresses, Jesus meets more disciples.
The stories of Disciples like Nathaniel, Andrew, Philip, John are better examined as well.
Compared to the first season, Season 2 moves faster.
As usual, Miracles, outrageous statements and the unimpressed gaze of the Pharisees are never missing wherever Jesus is.
The main theme of the second season explored the disciples beginning to understand the one who has called them. We see the internal bickering amongst the disciples as expected since Jesus chose very unlikely people as his disciples and emotional dealing with issues such as the arrest of John the baptiser
With the gang slowly garnering the attention of the roman officials due to their increased followership, the trouble is doubled.
What to expect from The Chosen, Season 3
Few days ago, the trailer for the third season of The Chosen series was released which hit 1M views in 24 hours.
What is it about TV series and going dark from season 3?
With John the baptiser in Prison, Jesus time is fast moving.
We expect to see more of the social-impact of Jesus and his ministry. This season will reveal the intensifying conflicts between Jesus Roman Government and the religious leaders.
It is suddenly dawning on the disciples that to follow Jesus is to risk the wrath of the religious and political leaders.
Why is it that whenever there is a problem in the synagouge, it's always you three? 😅— Most likely Jesus, Simon, John and Andrew.
Jesus sure doesn't like trouble, but his words always #stirupthewater.
The most Iconic scene might be the feeding of the 5000 by Jesus.
Funfact: Dallas Jenkins— the director of The Chosen Series got 5000 fans of the series to shoot that single scene. Breathtaking!
From the trailer, it is shown Jesus will be meeting Judas Isacarot. Dear lord, is betrayal coming soon?
This third season is sure to be an emotional roller coaster. Spoiler alerts? There are tombs and arrests.
In Jesus's word to Shmuel—a Pharisee, he's losing time. So are we. We've got 4 more seasons to the end of this Franchise. And what a journey we have ahead of us in such a short time.
Why you should watch The Chosen?
At this point, everything I have said may sound like an exaggeration, but The Chosen Series is the breath of Fresh air that so many people have long awaited. Like the Messiah, this is long awaited series believers have looked forward to.
Now, like many others, I love the Lord but I have to admit that many faith-based arts are… well… not that artistic.
The dilemma of Content vs Creativity seems to be one that many Christian creatives suffer from. Or in Christian terms,
The message or the art? Will the art diminish the message? Which should take priority?
The Chosen seems to be stirring up this water.
An Enjoyable show with terrific message. Many who are not religious have found this movie to be an enjoyable show.
Dallas Jenkins reveals he had a single goal in mind while creating the show. To create an enjoyable show.
It's okay if Christian content isn't your thing. However, if quality content is your thing, then yeah. The Chosen is worth a bite. It's a totally enjoyable show even if you want to filter out the Gospel truth in it. The Chosen is not just another Jesus show.
The Chosen is different, but maybe it's time to get used to different.
So, are you ready to binge Jesus?
