Chevalier (2023)

WRITTEN BY STEFANI ROBINSON
DIRECTED BY STEPHEN WILLIAMS

Chevalier is a biographical musical drama written by Stefani Robinson on the life of Joseph Bologne.

Joseph Bologne, the illegitimate son of a French Plantation owner and an African Slave. The movie gives a foreshadowing of the grown Joseph Bologne, The Chevalier de saint George  interrupting Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and upstaging him at his own concert.

With this scene, we are taken to the beginning of Joseph's Fame when he is dropped at an academy for elites. Due to his colour, he is almost not accepted due to the fact that at this time, the blacks were still seen as beneath any other race and an "abomination" for the french and the African slaves to procreate. A result of this procreation being Joseph Bologne. He is eventually accepted based purely on merit of his talent. Joseph's father's parting words with him being, "Be excellent. Nobody can tear down and excellent french man."

With this we are brought to his teenage years as we see a peek of this racial discrimination against Joseph by his French mates. Joseph goes on a fencing duel with a french counterpart and wins, at this point he gains recognition from Queen Marie Antoinette who dubs him Chevalier de saint George. From this point up his life is potrayed as a roller coaster that only goes up.

Joseph proposes to be the  conductor of the Paris opera. With his friendship with the Queen Marie Antoinette she proposes a duel between both competitors. This competition brings him in contact with Josephine the wife of Marc Reine. They both have an affair which leads to a child. But this child is killed by Marc Reine.

Joseph Bologne's life begins to fall apart as he fails to be the conductor of the Paris opera, his falling out with the queen as she fails to back him up followed by the death of his child.

He fights back by composing music which gave hope  to the slaves leading to a riot with these french men chanting "Egalité". Meaning, "Equality of man."

Joseph Bologne's music plays a vital role in French history. Eventually his songs were banned for giving too much hope to the African slaves. This led to the loss of many of Joseph Bologne works although they are being studied now.

The movie is both Educational and entertaining, everything Sophocles wanted a drama to be. And everything Aristotle describes a drama as in his book Aristotle's poetics.

In my opinion CHEVALIER is a selcouth movie. I recommend for ages between 13 and above. Purely exceptional.
