JUNE POETRY COLLECTION (2023)

THE PHYSICS OF LOVE
By Yahuza Usman

You are the field in a magnet
Attracting my loneliness to behold your face—
& I can't evade its cohesive force of attraction.

We now emerge on a contact force,
Where its pull force wheedles you to chuckle
And its push force dragoons you to sight at me.

I can't go away from you anymore,
As you became the Physics of love
And I became your Albert and Newton.

Thus let your smile be our gravitational force,
& with our mass, we can be thrown vertically upward
& we shall be fed with the air resistance we love
to leave the sky of doubting memories.

POEM IV:
By Barnabas Ekpima

here, the ocean
it dries to dust
we smile
like we've seen it before

like we've seen it before
we smile
it dries to dust
here, the ocean.

THOUGHTS

Oh mother!
Avail me the pleasure of your breasts
That I may cry on them
Avail me your soft hands ever ready
For I have sinned and made a mistake
And in my loneliness have I realized it's depth

I am this one with air
Tossed about by ungrateful nostrils
I have but myself to blame for this misery
For what I had, I cherished not
And that which I cherished has bade me farewell
Tis true what thou hast
Is indeed not cherished till lost

POEM:
By Barnabas Ekpima

never have I, been to Sichuan, nor Haiti but—

I have, felt earthquakes in my mother’s voice.
Heard her prayers fall
like Jericho’s walls; her words, like the sound of bricks crushing a body.

She cries, and even earthquakes tremble.

I have, seen her turn falling stones to bread, and call my dead things, body to life.

The preacher man says,
"with faith like mustard seed, you'll say to this mountain...
crumble to pieces"
—but to love like my mother, is to be both mustard and mountain.
